Marlies Schrey, wife of knitwear manufacturer Gerd Schrey, is murdered in broad daylight in front of a popular excursion restaurant. For detectives Dorn and Lessing, everything points to a botched kidnapping.

The kidnappers promptly make contact: they also have Gerd in their custody. They demand two million euros in ransom from his son Maik. The Schrey couple had taken out a kidnapping insurance policy that expires in a few days. Did Gerd Schrey stage his own kidnapping to save his ailing knitwear business?

Maik, who courts his father's favor, also comes under investigation: Marlies was his hated stepmother. Did the allegedly estranged father-son duo devise a diabolical plan?
